Lab Automation Engineer

The Lab Automation Engineer, MSAT Digital position is responsible for expanding automation and data-handling capabilities across Global Manufacturing, Science & Technology (MSAT) labs. This individual will collaborate with other Automation team members and MSAT project teams to design relevant and robust automation workflows.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Hands-on lab work using robotics equipment to support development of automated workflows for upstream, downstream and analytical
  • Identify and implement solutions (hardware and software) for improvement of the high-quality automation infrastructure
  • Regularly interact with project scientists to advance project goals
  • Communicate automation solutions through oral presentation, written standard operating procedures (SOPs), and in-person demonstrations
  • Contribute to development of custom software applications for automated data handling processes for high throughput methods
  • Take responsibility for local automation and robotic laboratory infrastructure, operation, and maintenance
  • Design, build, and maintain data management solutions for the lab

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 6+ years automation experience in industry or institute R&D experience
  • Master’s degree with 4+ years automation experience in industry or institute R&D experience
  • PhD with limited or no automation experience in industry or institute R&D experience

Competencies/Skills required for this position:

  • Degree relevant to automation, robotics, and/or computer programming.
  • Life science experience, or alternatively, willingness to acquire Life Science knowledge relevant to the position
  • Expertise in maintaining, programming and running liquid handling workstations
  • Basic programming skills (VBA, Python, R, SQL or equivalent), as well as use of robotic scheduling software
  • Experience in automating laboratory workflows in an industrial or commercial environment, such as with robotic liquid handlers or microfluidics
  • Excellent written and oral communication abilities are required, along with the desire to work both independently (self-starter) and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to be effective in a growing, dynamic, and changing business environment

Working conditions:

  • Requires working in an industrial laboratory environment.
  • Domestic and International travel may be required.
  • Full-time position in day shift (flexible working hour system, 40 hours week)
